The 4Cs of Diamond Standards
Before buying a diamond, it's essential to understand the four primary factors that determine its quality and value. Established by GIA, these factors are collectively known as the 4Cs.
Cut Grade
The cut is widely considered the most important C, determining how much the diamond sparkles. It reflects the precision with which facets are angled to reflect light.
Color Grade
Measures the absence of color. Ranging from D (completely colorless and highly valuable) to Z (noticeable yellow/brown tint). D, E, F are premium colorless grades.
Clarity Grade
Assesses the purity of the diamond by looking at tiny internal inclusions or external blemishes. Flawless (FL) and Very Very Slightly Included (VVS) are top tiers.
Carat Weight
Refers to the physical weight of the diamond. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger carats are exponentially rarer and command premium pricing.
